Right Under Your Nose

QUESTION TO ANSWER BEFORE YOU READ THIS:  do famous people draw such crowds because of their tallent or because they are famous?

Every e-mail I get I check.  this even has a video of it that you can watch!  go here

A man sat at a Metro Station in Washington D.C. on a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:

the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A3 year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

45 minutes:

The musician played.  Only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace.

He collected $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ....

How many other things are we missing?

Snopes says this is true:

I've gotten this email and seen this before.  It's definitely important to enjoy the moments...no matter where or when they are.

I would like to think that I would have stopped to listen to the music.  I never have cash on me, though, so I would not have been able to give him anything other than an appreciative smile.  Adults too often run on a schedule, and if they are in a Metro station then they probably don't think they have time to stop for a few minutes.  I would have hoped that anyone with a child would have stopped so that their child could have watched and listened.  I would have done that with mine.  If the adults had recognized him, would they have stopped?  And would they have stopped because of who he is or because of the music?

You know the old saying: Stop and smell the roses.

Good story to share, Cowboy!  When your little one comes along, you'll be surprised at how differently you look at things; even the everyday things will have new meaning for you as you see the world through your child's eyes.

There is alot we are missing. I can't count how many people I've seen standing on a street corner with signs asking for food, work, or a simple ride. Most people don't want to give their resources to a man who looks like a beggar but might ride a Cadilac home. Since they can't tell the difference, most don't give much of anything at all. So it is the genuine people who ask for these things who suffer most. Few things, I think, are more beautiful than unselfish, unrequired giving to those who cannot return the favor.

Happened a couple of years ago. Unfortunate that music 400 years old isn't recognized, but pop that fades in 2 years is marketable. I'll take Joshua Bell any day over the likes of Mariah Carey, MJ, Brittney, etc. Depends on who the famous person is. If they are famous like Paris Hilton is, she's related to famous people, and then there are famous people who draw crowds due to talent like Josh Groban, Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, etc.
